OSHA Regulations

OSHA Regulations

To maintain a safe work place, and comply with OSHA requirements, employers must provide the proper signs to indicate the exit route, and the safety equipment installed in their facility. For example Section 1910.37(b) which states: "Each exit must be clearly visible and marked by a sign reading 'Exit.' " or Section 1926.34(b): " 'Exit marking.' Exits shall be marked by a readily visible sign. Access to exits shall be marked by readily visible signs in all cases where the exit or way to reach it is not immediately visible to the occupants". Ask your local Jalite Distributor for our OSHA compliant EXIT sign to ensure your workplace is compliant, even if there is a loss of power! Best practice in response to risk assessment would demand a comprehensive array of directional signs meeting OSHA requirments to ensure that the means of escape is secured at all times. JALITE Photoluminescent products add that extra and essential feature of mitigating the risk of failure of emergency lighting or protecting occupied areas not requiring such provisions. Furthermore, they provide the means to provide directional information duplicated at low location providing escape path information economically and without the need for heavy costs of wiring and maintenance. OSHA regulations also require safety signs and notices to be used to reduce risk by reinforcing training and education, to provide warnings of risks in the workplace and protective measures, including the prohibition of behaviour likely to create a risk of any kind.

How Can You Keep First Responders Safe?

How Can You Keep First Responders Safe?

Words cannot express the importance of first responders. Every day over half a million calls are made to 9-1-1, calls which often bring first responders into action. Employees calling in an emergency at the workplace know the layout of the building, but it is more often the responders first time at the location. It is the responsibility of a business owner to ensure the safety of not only everyday occupants of the building, but also first responder in the event of an emergency. Communicating hazards is key to the safety of both workers and first responders. “Put Yourself in Our Boots” is a campaign that emphasizes how crucial it is that business owners create a safe work environment. Their videos portray how treacherous a lack of communication can be for first responders, most of who are already being placed under deadly circumstances. Traditional safety signs don’t communicate their message very well in an emergency. One way to keep first responders safe, is to communicate safety hazards in your facility using Jalite photoluminescent safety signs. When the lights go out, ours go on.™ For more information on a distributor near you send us an email.

Distance factor Z for safety signs

Distance factor Z for safety signs

Many factors will influence the distance factor Z of a safety sign which is expressed as the ratio of the observation distance D and the size of the symbol or text d as follows : Z = D/d   the Z factor ( distance factor Z) is not the same for all graphical symbols the Z factor is influenced by the luminance of the sign (brightness appearance) the Z factor is influence by the luminance contrast between the symbol elements or text and the background the Z factor is influenced by the visual acuity of the audience the Z factor is influenced by the level of familiarity that the audience has with the symbol or text The revision of ISO 3864-1 should provide good guidance for the Exit sign of ISO 7010. UL924 legibility testing for Exit signs provides excellent data for the Z factor of photoluminescent signs of this quality illuminated with only 50 lux of ambient lighting after 90 minutes in complete darkness, It must be remembered that Z factor is always determined when the sign is observed "head on". For a sign to be legible and recognizeable it must of course be detected in the field of view within peripheral vision. Sign size is of course essential to making a sign conspicuous as is luminance and luminous contrast with the surroundings. However, it is essential the sign be mounted in a position facing the observer so that it can be clearly detected. The sign should also be positioned in the correct context to function effectively. Useful guidance is obtainable from JALITE and JALITE Authorised distributors which distinguishes professionals from printers.
